Abstract:

The National Hockey League locked out its players for the second time in seven years after losing the
entire 2004-05 season in an effort to obtain a salary cap that was touted as the panacea for financial
stability and profitability to its member teams. However, the league maintains that two-thirds of the teams
lost money during the 2011-12 season, despite a 50% increase in total league revenue since 2005. This
article will analyze a number of key issues between the parties and discuss the importance and potential
resolution of each one during negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
